What Makes Puerto Vallarta Quaint

What Makes Puerto Vallarta Quaint? A Mexico travel destination article.Quaint, as defined by Webster and others, means unusual or old fashioned in a pleasing way, with a charming old fashioned quality, or oddly picturesque.

Some will say that Puerto Vallarta is a quaint or picturesque city due to the thousands of whitewashed villas, condos, and other buildings nestled among the Sierra Madre hillsides surrounding Banderas Bay along the Pacific Ocean coastline. Others might attribute the quaintness of Vallarta to the many nearby inlets and coves where the old fishing pangas are docked with their resident pelicans waiting for dinner or perhaps to the beach vendors selling their colorful blankets, sculptures, and artwork.

Viewing the crafts of local artisans while strolling along the seafront promenade, referred to as the malecon, or visiting the hundreds of curio and souvenir shops gives many tourists the feeling of being in a quaint little Mexican fishing village. For others, the optimum feeling of being in a quaint little Mexican village or relaxing in Paradise is derived from sipping margaritas or cervezas in one of the many beachfront cantinas or restaurants while watching the magnificent sunsets.

Although the city has reached the size of St. Louis with 350,000 inhabitants, it still possesses the atmosphere of a small village where everyone seems to know each other. Residents often consider Vallarta to be charming in an old fashioned way due to the friendliness of its people; where everyone that you meet is readily open to new friendships as recently revealed when surveyed readers of Conde Nast magazine voted Puerto Vallarta the friendliest resort destination in the world.

With the above being said, some of us tend to find the quaintness of Vallarta to be most closely associated with granite; yes, granite!

Located on the same latitude as Hawaii, Puerto Vallarta lies at the extreme western end of the Mexican Trans-Volcanic Axis range; a mountain range extending across the entire country of Mexico consisting of 38 volcanoes that were formed during the late-Pleistocene age. Twelve of these volcanoes are still considered to be active, i.e., they have erupted at least once during the past 10,000 years, however only a few of these remain quite active at this time. When they were originally formed, they spewed their molten lava or magma containing all sorts of igneous materials throughout the area, with granite being one of the most commonly formed igneous rocks.

The entire region of central Mexico, including Puerto Vallarta and Banderas Bay, is laden with granite; so much so, that granite counter tops are more common in Vallarta than are those of Formica! In addition to huge granite rocks, there are obviously millions of smaller granite rocks in the area; many of which lie at the bottom of the ocean, bay, and in river beds. As these smaller underwater granite rocks are tossed and turned by wave action over long periods of time, they are reduced in size, their edges are smoothly rounded off, and they become cobblestones. During the evenings in Vallarta when the surf is active, you can hear the rumbling sound of millions of cobblestones as they move in and out with the wave action.

These 3" to 10" granite cobblestones have a myriad of usages; commonly being associated with the construction of buildings, walls, and fences, and most importantly, the paving of roads.

Although there is no shortage of road construction materials in Mexico with CEMEX, headquartered in Monterrey, Mexico, being the world's largest supplier of building materials and the world's third largest cement producer, cobblestone is still the material of choice for road building in Puerto Vallarta. The hard granite cobblestone paved roads provide flexibility to traffic and earth movement, are permeable to water, and are simple to repair. Granted, they're not the best on shock absorbers and you can forget about riding your bicycle around town! Residents of Vallarta are accustomed to the uneven road surfaces but as a fair warning to first time visitors, please use caution when strolling through the city; it's relatively easy to sprain an ankle if you're not paying attention to where you're walking on the cobblestone streets.

Perhaps more significantly than the benefits listed above, cobblestone roads preserve the quaintness of Vallarta. With more than 90% of the local streets and roads paved with cobblestones, it is probably the first thing that most locals as well as tourists think of when considering the qualities that make Vallarta one of the most beautiful resort destinations in the world.

With all the conveniences of modern day life available in Vallarta, including satellite TV, high speed internet service, and internet based telecommunications, we still hear the familiar sound of horses' hooves clip clopping on the cobblestone street in front of our mountainside villa as the ranchers from high on the mountain carry their goods to town on a daily basis.

Peering over the poolside terrace, we see the cobblestone streets below that wind their way down the mountain, all appearing to terminate near the bay. What a glorious site; a 180° view of Banderas Bay, El Centro, the native flora and fauna of the Sierra Madres, the whitewashed and pastel colored villas below with their red tile roofs, and yes, the cobblestone streets winding between them. It just doesn't get much more picturesque or quainter than that!

In summarizing, among the many unique characteristics that Vallarta has to offer, its picturesque cobblestone streets have to be at or near the top of everyone's list. Perhaps Vallarta is no longer a sleepy little Mexican fishing village, but due to its abundance of granite cobblestone streets, it does retain its status as being one of the most beautifully quaint resort destinations in the world.

Exploring the Arts in Puerto Vallarta.
Monday, July 9, 2007, 06:44 PM - Puerto Vallarta
Exploring the Arts in Puerto Vallarta. A Mexico travel destination and information article. While most tourists visit Puerto Vallarta to experience the beaches, resorts and unmatched natural beauty, there is a more creative allure just beneath the surface. Though Puerto Vallarta is far from a sprawling city, the community houses more galleries than any Mexican destination outside the capital. Throughout the years, artists and aficionados have flocked to the majestic landscape of Puerto Vallarta. The results can be seen throughout the galleries of the city - in everything from painting, sculpture and ceramics to jewelry, literature and fashion. Yet, even if you don't step inside any of Puerto Vallarta's galleries, you will still find yourself surrounded by art - courtesy of public sculptures throughout the city and the paintings lining the walls of local restaurants. Regardless of where you set foot in this gorgeous city, you are sure to be overwhelmed by the powerful creative spirit.

Inside the galleries of Puerto Vallarta, you will find everything from folk art to the most challenging contemporary compositions of the region's vibrant art scene. One of the most well-known galleries is the Galeria Arte Latinoamericano - a two-story collection of Puerto Vallarta's finest painters and sculptors. Another great destination for locally produced work is Galeria Dante. Featuring more than 50 artists from the Puerto Vallarta community, this gallery has been awarded top honors in numerous publications.

While there is a strong focus on locally produced artwork in Puerto Vallarta, don't be surprised to find some famous names on the walls. For instance, Galeria Omar Alonso has displayed works by documentary photographer Sebastiao Salgado and European artists such as Wouter Deruytter and Michal Macku. Galeria Corsica - a popular destination for collectors - features artists championed by Mexico City's Museum of Modern Art. The Galerie des Artistes - a space known for its many rooms of unique pieces - has also been known to exhibit works by Diego Rivera and Jose Clemente Orozco.

One of the most celebrated art forms of Mexico is Mata Ortiz pottery, an elegant craft on display in a pair of galleries. Both Galeria Mata Ortiz and Galeria de Ollas feature some of the best ceramic work you will find anywhere in the world. You can also find traditional work produced by the Huichol - a tribe residing in the mountains outside Puerto Vallarta - at Galeria Piramide. Not only will you be able to see incredible examples of traditional bead and woven art, you can witness these indigenous artisans working at the gallery.

One of the most popular events in Puerto Vallarta is the Old Town Art Walk that takes place each Wednesday during the tourism season - generally October to April. On these special evenings, you will find at least 17 galleries open late to display everything from the newest work of local artists to treasured paintings by Old Masters. You can enjoy this self-guided walking tour at your own pace with the assistance of detailed maps available at any of the galleries or your resort. The Old Town is also a great place to dine, but make sure to save some room for complimentary hors d'oeuvres and cocktails.

No visit to Puerto Vallarta is complete without a stroll down the city's famed boardwalk - the Malecon. Besides offering a beautiful view of Banderas Bay, the Malecon serves as an outdoor sculpture museum. Beginning at the north end of the boardwalk, you will encounter Mathis Lidice's "Los Milenios" - one of the most photographed sites in Puerto Vallarta. Tourists are also known to gather around the "Rotonda del Mar," a unique assemblage of chairs by local artist Alejandro Colunga. If you want to learn more about the sculptures of the Malecon or the artists behind them, don't miss the Tuesday morning tour offered by Gary Thompson - owner of the Galleria Pacifico. Ramiz Barquet - one of the city's most celebrated artists - is often on hand to discuss his famous work "La Nostalgia" and offer a unique perspective on the region's artistic culture.

Most importantly, Puerto Vallarta has something for everyone's taste and price range - making it easy to come home with a piece of this beautiful city. Regardless of when you visit Puerto Vallarta, the city will have plenty to inspire your creative side. The Puerto Vallarta art scene is always expanding, incorporating new styles and concepts to reflect the ideas of artists and visitors alike.

Puerto Vallarta Bass Fishing.
Wednesday, June 6, 2007, 03:25 PM - Puerto Vallarta
Puerto Vallarta Bass Fishing. A Mexico travel destination and information resources from Resources For Attorneys, a legal resources and lifestyle information portal. The world's finest destination for vacation is Puerto Vallarta Mexico. It is well- known for its legitimate environment located on a large bay of beautiful sandy beaches and they are filled with big lunkers.

This is the real Mexico complete with cobblestone streets and colonial architecture with beautiful weather that goes along with, and friendly people bringing their warm smiles.

Puerto Vallarta is one of the loveliest places you can spot on the globe. It combines a unique ethnic culture with today's resort facilities, reflected in a variety and inspiring activities and convenient accommodations. Puerto Vallarta's geographical diversity is represented in its mountains, jungles, waterfalls, rivers and weather is not a hindrance for your fabtastic vacation. They always have a great weather that will not spoil your ultimate vacation in life.

As the Puerto Vallarta's popularity has grown bigger and bigger, more tourist flock in, luckily it does not get crowded in the view of the fact that it is located on the huge Banderas bay ("also known as Bay of Flags"), one of the largest natural bay of Pacific Ocean.

Banderas Bay is one of the most excellent locations for sport fishing in the globe. Angler's from around the world come back every year to find out if they can beat the last year's big fish that had been caught. It is a brilliant place to find bass fish, mahi-mahi, marlin, tuna, Dorado, rooster tail, and red snapper for the reason that it is a 40- mile-wide bay, with a depth of two miles.

Some of the other species that can be caught in the area include Amberjack, Pargo, Snook, Jack Crevalle, Snapper, Grouper, Rainbow Runner, Red Snapper, Rooster Fish, Sierra, Spanish Macarel, Triggerfish, and many more.

One of Mexico's hottest bass fishing lake is known as Agua Milpa, which opened in the fall of 1997.the 70,000 acre lake, one of the most easy to get to of Mexico's hot bass fishing lake can get to by paved road in 3 hours, either your heading from Guadalajara or Puerto Vallarta or by air to Tepic, Nayarit then a short 45 minute ride to the lodge.

The largemouth bass fish lake was secluded from fishing until the fall of '97. It is an ideal food base and has an ideal growing temperature for bass fishing making it as there own paradise. Agua Milpa Lake is loaded with aggressive largemouth bass, averaging from 2 ½ to 10 pounds. The most numbered healthy bass fish caught was over 50 fishes for just 4 hours and the largest fish caught that time weighs six pounds.

The best fishing rigs in Mexico are the bass fishing boats and motors. They are all equipped with new or nearly new outboards, troll motors and swivel fish.

Fishing fanatics from all over the world meet on this lake to try their luck in catching the largest creatures that are hard to find. They are required to have a fishing license either for daily or annual purposes. Tournaments and most of the fishing activities are coordinated at the Puerto Vallarta Bass club located at the lake Agua Milpa

Catching and releasing fish is now starting to get known in Puerto Vallarta and in the world which make the anglers more concerned about protecting and increasing the sport fish population. Practicing good catch and release techniques provides a first class fishing experience while recognizing our responsibility to maintain our valuable fishing resources for future generations. When properly handled and released, fish will continue to repopulate the waters for our continued enjoyments. If fishes are not released and handled properly, there will come a time that in the next generation fishes will not be transparent anymore.

Pity the children of the next generation for they may no longer see the beauty and exquisiteness of the fishes that swim in the oceans, seas, rivers, lakes, bays and other aquatic forms. Still pity to them for they can no longer taste the deliciousness of these fishes.

Come and visit Puerto Vallarta if you want to have the big chance of a life time. Choose this place for your next vacation and you won't regret the adventure you'll have to experience and the beautiful sceneries and exotic beauties of the place.

Puerto Vallarta Travel.
Friday, June 1, 2007, 02:15 PM - Puerto Vallarta
Puerto Vallarta Travel. A Mexico travel destination and information resources from Resources For Attorneys, a legal resources and lifestyle information portal.Overview
Puerto Vallarta, Mexico’s second largest beach resort, lies in the middle of the Bahía de Banderas bay. The majority of Puerto Vallarta’s hotels are clustered in Nuevo Vallarta, a fairly tourist-oriented stretch of coast. South of Nuevo Vallarta is the recently constructed marina where the rich and famous who have chosen Puerto Vallarta as their vacation home keep their sailboats and yachts. The city’s historic center has kept its appeal even amidst the movement toward modernity -- it is perhaps the area that has a majority of the city’s sightseeing attractions. At night, most of the townspeople meet at the zócalo, the city’s nightlife center. The island in the river, Isla Río Cuale, is also a popular tourist destination, lined in the center with high-end restaurants and galleries.

Sightseeing Attractions
While Puerto Vallarta’s beaches remain its largest attractions, there are several notable sights that make the city distinct. Taking a walk through the city’s center will offer visitors a glimpse of Puerto Vallarta’s culture, as its locals carry baskets of clothing to the river for washing or browse for the best deals in the markets. In the center, visitors will find such notable landmarks as the Church of Guadalupe, the Plaza Aquiles Serdán, and the seahorse statue. The Isla Río Cuale is also a good spot for sightseeing outside of the main tourist-oriented center. There’s an archeology museum at the foot of the island that displays items that were locally-found, and John Huston's statue can be found at the entrance to a park where local women wash their clothing.

Outdoor Activities
As a primarily outdoor-oriented vacation spot, Puerto Vallarta has many outdoor activities available for its tourists. There are several golf courses scattered around the island. Some of the more notable courses are The Mayan Palace Nuevo Vallarta Golf Club, Vista Vallarta, and La Marina Vallarta. Windsurfing and parasailing are available through vendors at almost every beach as well as snorkeling. However, the best places to snorkel are through the Los Arcos underwater caves and Marietas Islands caverns. Banderas Bay is a popular spot for fishing and the home to an annual fishing tournament. And finally, many ranches throughout the city offer horseback riding opportunities.

Nightlife
Puerto Vallarta is not the most popular destination for its nightlife; in fact, most of the people you’ll find in its clubs, bars, and restaurants are tourists. However, there are ample eating, drinking, and shopping experiences to be had in the city. The majority of these attractions can be found clustered around the most popular beaches, throughout the city’s center, and in the center of the Isla Río Cuale.
