How-To Conquer Central Mexico in Your Next Vacation
Tuesday, July 31, 2007, 08:40 PM - Guanajuato
How-To Conquer Central Mexico in Your Next Vacation. A Mexico travel destination and information article.I've noticed lately the tourists that make their way to central Mexico (Guanajuato) tend to be either the loosey-goosey backpackers or the tourist elite who tend to have a lot of experience in coming to strange and new places.

The backpackers (and there's nothing wrong with loosey-goosey, I would like to add) seem to be a highly adaptable group that can, more or less, stay almost anywhere, under most conditions, and more easily go with the flow, no matter what the flow throws their way.

The tourist elite group has the money to stay in places that cater to every wish. This group can shell out the bucks to stay at places that cater to every whim and make the accommodations feel safe and secure. Because of this group's vast experience at traveling, these people are not rattled much when they encounter new and strange things within a culture.

What has become apparent to me is there is a missing class of tourists. It is the middle-class income group of Americans and Canadians who, although they've heard of central Mexico, have never visited. They might want to check central Mexico out as a cheaper alternative to the classic resort areas of Mexico, but are terrified to come to a place where Spanish is the predominate language and where they might have a bit of a rough go at managing their trip.

In March 2007, while tooling about the smaller towns looking for article fodder, we met an American woman sitting quietly on a bench reading. She told us she and her husband take the time and effort to come to central Mexico to escape the traditional Mexican resorts with their sky-high prices. She also told us of friends who vacation in the resort areas and would never think of coming to central Mexico because of the language factor.

Whenever I think of the language issue and tourists, I am reminded of the travel writer, Bill Bryson, and his book, Neither Here Nor There. This man went all over Europe despite being devoid of language skills. Yet, he did it and produced a very funny book because of it.

Spanish, though immensely helpful for the central Mexico wannebee monolingual American traveler, is not necessarily a major requirement. Now, admittedly, we've seen some tourist meltdowns in some foreigners who miraculously got to Guanajuato only to discover that "everyone speaks Spanish here." You can read these all-to-frequent comments on many travel forum websites.

The misconception is that English is going to be spoken by the locals involved in the tourist service industry everywhere in Mexico. Unfortunately, it's not so.

My belief is that if central Mexico wants to attract more and more Americans and Canadians, it should begin the process of becoming bilingual in English. I remember being so amazed in the resort areas of Mexico that so many were bilingual. In central Mexico, they've yet to get the vision that English will attract more visitors who want to spend a lot of money in their establishments.

What those who could vacation in central Mexico don't generally know is there are ways of overcoming their fear of the language factor. They don't realize there are places other than the hyper-expensive places that can easily set you back $150.00 to $250.00 USD a night. We saw this American man, who, again I say, miraculously showed up in Guanajuato, have a meltdown. In an act of desperation, he whipped out his cell phone to call home. His conversation went something like, "I'm turning around and leaving this place…no one speaks English." While it is not true that no one speaks English, I can understand his frustration because in the town where I live, English is not widely spoken.

How these tourists end up in central Mexico seems to me to be the greatest miracle!

One way to overcome this sometimes-paralyzing handicap is to, of course, learn some Spanish. There are home study courses that can offer you far more versatility in the language than you might think.

Another way is to stay in one of the high-quality Bed and Breakfasts that are scattered around town. Some of these establishments have Americans who are totally bilingual and bicultural. They will take care of you and alleviate your fears about getting around town where you would be hard pressed to find English speakers. There are also some Mexicans B & B owners who are totally bilingual and bicultural who would offer you the same peace of mind as well as fine accommodations at considerable savings over what you would pay in the resort areas.

I really think this is the way to go. There have been some B & B's in Guanajuato for quite a while that could set you back the equivalent of your children's college tuition. If you can afford to pay resort prices and want to, the uber-rich places are here for you. However, if what you want is a cheaper, high quality place with a home-like atmosphere where not just your sleep and eating needs are met but one in which the owner can set you straight on cultural issues and guide you through the rough spots, then you want the smaller, and in my view far more versatile, Bed and Breakfasts.

And, let's be honest, if you want to venture out and try stretching your vacation muscles by coming to Guanajuato, you need more than three hots and a cot when your vacation legs feel a little rubbery in a place where Spanish is predominately spoken.

More Americans and Canadians could come to central Mexico and take advantage of the mind-expanding experience of visiting the birthplace of the Republic of Mexico. Colonial Mexico exudes history and culture with each step you take. This is the place where it all began. The resort areas, fun as they most certainly are, having seafood to delight your tastes, expenses to break the bank, is not all Mexico has to offer.

There's far more to see and it's right here, in central Mexico.

Swinging The Clubs In Cancun
Tuesday, July 24, 2007, 06:24 PM - Cancun
Swinging The Clubs In Cancun. A Mexico travel destination and information article. As the number of championship caliber courses in the Cancun area continues to grow, golf will undoubtedly become one of Cancun's most popular activities. With a number of courses already conveniently located in The Hotel Zone - adjacent to all of Cancun's other activities - a great round of golf is easy to add to your Cancun itinerary. Most of the courses you will encounter were designed with the environment and natural landscape in mind by some of the world's finest golf course architects. For the more committed golfing traveler, several excellent courses are located throughout the Riviera Maya, just south of Cancun. Regardless of where you decide to play, you will be treated to some excellent scenery and an unforgettable round of golf.

Located in the heart of the Hotel Zone, the Cancun Golf Club at Pok ta Pok is one of the oldest and most renowned courses in the area. Constructed in 1976 by Robert Trent Jones Jr., this Cancun golf treasure makes excellent use of the picturesque shoreline and scattered Mayan ruins. Though the course has hosted numerous prestigious tournaments, this par 72 offers an enjoyable experience to golfers of all skill levels. The site also features top-notch practice facilities and a restaurant with panoramic views of Cancun and the Caribbean Sea. Also in the Hotel Zone, the Hilton Cancun Beach and Golf Resort, an 18-hole championship course amongst abundant wildlife and Mayan ruins, is highlighted by the "island tee" on the majestic 7th hole.

Jack Nicklaus' signature Cancun golf course is located at The Moon Spa and Golf Club. Composed of three distinct 9-hole courses - Jungle, Lakes and Dunes - The Moon Spa and Golf Club is a shining example of the ecological conservation employed in Cancun golf course construction. In addition to the exotic vegetation and animal life surrounding the course, players will be treated to incredible views of the Riviera Maya. Like a few other courses in the area, The Moon Spa and Golf Club features all-inclusive service with complimentary food and drinks, as well as transportation from your Cancun resort.

Located 45 minutes south of Cancun is Greg Norman's excellent contribution to Cancun golf, El Camaleon Mayakoba. True to its name, the course features an incredibly distinctive layout amongst a fluctuating landscape of jungles, mangrove, subterranean caves, pristine lagoons and stretches of Caribbean sand. Many players have also been impressed by El Camaleon's GPS-equipped golf carts that not only measure your shots, but also allow you to record your scores electronically and order refreshments.

Also south of Cancun is a pair of courses perfect for adventurous golfers, Iberostar Playa Paraiso Golf Club and Playacar Golf Club. Designed by P.B. Dye, Iberostar Playa Paraiso Golf Club features narrow fairways and deep sand traps cut from the vibrant Mayan jungle. The Playacar Golf Club, designed by Robert von Hagge, is surrounded by a number of lakes, while several holes hug the Caribbean shoreline.

The first golf course on the island of Cozumel, just southeast of Cancun - the Cozumel Country Club - is also one of the most challenging courses ever designed by Jack Nicklaus. Carved from the Mayan jungles and limestone bluffs at the northwestern tip of the island, the course took five years to be constructed. However, the course was designed with the environment in mind, receiving a certification in Environmental Planning from the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary System.

Given this growing popularity of golf in Cancun, it is no surprise that several more tournament quality courses are scheduled to open in the near future. The Puerto Cancun Golf Course, designed by Tom Weiskopf, is currently being constructed between The Hotel Zone and downtown Cancun. Though Puerto Cancun won't be completed until late 2008, the course will add another championship caliber challenge within close reach of Cancun's premier resorts. Scheduled to open in late 2007, The Tournament Players Course (TPC) of Cancun has potential to be one of the finest courses in all of Mexico. Designed by Tom Fazio, one of today's most celebrated golf course architects, The TPC of Cancun will feature 36 sprawling holes and plenty of unique challenges. Also under construction is much anticipated La Roca Country Club, designed by PGA Tour legend Nick Price.

Traveling to Mexico Soon.
Wednesday, July 18, 2007, 04:38 PM - General
Basilica. Traveling to Mexico Soon. A Mexico travel destination and information article. From the ancient architecture of Mexico City to the golden beaches of Pacific Mexico, Mexico is a country full of mystery, intrigue, natural beauty, history, and culture that is exclusive only to its walls. There are many different cities in Mexico that are frequently visited by tourists, and each has something completely different to offer its visitors.

The unique region of Baja Mexico is one of the most interesting and diverse geographical areas of the world and is still very much a frontier. The peninsula is home to some of the earth's most beautiful deserts, along with semi-tropical and mountainous regions, pine forests, and hundreds of miles of untouched beaches and coastline.

In Central Mexico, tourists can visit Mexico City, the nation’s capital. There you can appreciate the fascinating architecture of the aging buildings in the city’s Historic Center, or you can visit the Basilica of Guadalupe and such popular neighborhoods as San Angel, Coyoacan and Xochimilco. The central region offers the tranquility of its numerous forests, waterfalls, lakes, rivers, springs and caverns, all of which provide ideal settings for rafting, rappelling, cave exploring, scuba diving, camping, rock climbing and nature observing.

The cities of Northern Mexico are a perfect blend of history, culture, and modernism. There’s Chihuaha City, home of Pancho Villa’s mansion. Then there’s Hermosillo with its interesting blend of ancient and modern architecture. Next is Bahía Kino, Northern Mexico’s largest coastal city. Here, tourists can engage in waterskiing, diving, fishing, swimming, and relaxing on and off the beautiful white-sand beaches. Finally, in Monterrey, you will find a well-organized city with a great deal of cultural attractions, both inside city limits and in the immediate surrounding area.

The Whale Sharks Have Returned to Holbox.
Monday, July 16, 2007, 12:07 AM - General
The Whale Sharks Have Returned to Holbox. A Mexico travel destination and information article. The summer months of June, July, and August mark the time for the return of the giant whale shark to the waters north of the Yucatan Peninsula. And, a summer excursion to the Island of Holbox has been a rapidly growing desire for many aquatic life aficionados. Holbox WhaleShark Tours invites you to "Safely" Swim up-close with these amazing harmless creatures.

What is a whale shark? To begin with, it is the world's largest living fish. Known to have reached lengths of 46 feet (14m), the aquatic giant has alternating bands of thin white vertical bars and columns of white spots on a dark, blackish gray background, with a white belly. The head of the whale shark is flattened in appearance and has a narrow mouth that extends across the full width and small eyes that are forward facing. Equal to the propulsion methods of other sharks, the extremely powerful caudal fin moves from side to side propelling the whale shark through the water in a seemingly effortless manner. There are two dorsal fins, one small one near the tail, and the "tell-tale" large shark fin that is found the middle of the body, slightly toward the rear.

The appearance of the whale shark can be quite intimidating, considering it spends most of its time swimming with its dorsal fin cutting through the surface of the water while feeding; however, the whale shark is nothing to fear. These enormous animals feed on tiny plankton, small fish such as sardines and anchovies, and some slightly larger fish like mackerel by simply opening their wide mouths whilst swimming along the surface of the water. They pose absolutely no threat to humans or any larger sea animal.

Many a snorkeler or diver has labeled the whale shark as a gentle, curious creature, and now you can experience them for yourself! WHALESHARK TOURS are every day during SUMMER Feeding Season. Tours leave the island of Holbox daily and they include a complete exciting day-long adventure with transportation on our luxury Motor Launch to and from whale shark feeding grounds which are 1.5 hrs each way. There is much wildlife to see along the ride, including dolphins playing at the bow of the boat and more. Snacks, lunch, all Refreshments, licensed guide & boat captain are also included.

Chichen Itza Chosen as One of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
Friday, July 13, 2007, 08:35 PM - Chichen Itza
Chichen Itza Chosen as One of the New Seven Wonders of the World. A Mexico travel destination and information article. The list of new world wonders includes The Great Wall of China, Petra, Christ the Redeemer, Machu Picchu, The Colisseum, and Taj Mahal

The Mayan city of Chichen Itza, located in the Mexican state of Yucatan, was chosen as one of the "Seven New Wonders of the World" by approximately 100 million people around the globe, who cast their ballots by phone and Internet.

"The selection of Chichen Itza is recognition of the extremely vast and ancient historical and cultural heritage of Mexico, of which very few countries in the world can boast," said Francisco Lopez Mena, CEO of the Mexico Tourism Board.

The announcement of Chichen Itza's selection by the New7Wonders Foundation was made during a spectacular ceremony at Lisbon's Stadium of Light.

The archaeological center of Chichen Itza, the most important Maya capital at the end of the classic period (750 to 1200 A.D.), was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988.

Chichen Itza, which in the Mayan language means "at the mouth of the well of the Itza," was one of the most important Mayan political, commercial and religious centers of the classic period, but it fell into decline after the emergence of Mayapan as the new focal point of regional power in the Yucatan Peninsula.

The city is home to several buildings that are remarkable both for their architectural design and their religious and scientific significance. Among these are the Temple of Kukulkan (Feathered Serpent), the Observatory, the Temple of the Warriors and the Sacred Cenote (Well of Sacrifice).

The Temple of Kukulkan, one of the tallest and most notable structures in Mayan architecture sits on a 55.5-meter wide rectangular platform and rises to a height of 24 meters. Each of its four sides has 91 steps and the platform that crowns the pyramid is considered the 365th step, meaning there is one for each day of the solar calendar.

During the spring and fall equinox (March and September), visitors can enjoy a breathtaking spectacle: a corner of the Temple of Kukulkan casts a shadow in the shape of a giant "feathered serpent" that appears to slither its way down the side of the North staircase with the sun's movement. This natural phenomenon of light and shadow is a unique experience that attracts visitors from all parts of the world.

The Observatory, also known as "El Caracol" (The Snail) for its stone spiral interior staircase, is a cylindrical building with a dome that was used as an astronomical observatory, with its doors aligned to view the spring equinox, the declinations of the Moon and other astronomical events that helped determine the complex but extremely exact Mayan calendar.

Other popular sites at Chichen Itza are the Great Ballcourt - which, measuring 168 meters long and 70 meters wide, is the largest that has been discovered in the region known as Mesoamerica - and the Sacred Cenote, a large sinkhole 60 meters in diameter from which great treasures have been recovered: rings, necklaces and objects of gold and jade.

Thanks to all the people who voted, Chichen Itza today is a new wonder of the world, considered an icon of universal importance for humanity. As a result of this global and democratic selection process, the world will know Mexico for one of its 173 archaeological jewels, tangible evidence of the plurality and ethnic richness of the country's past.

We invite the world to visit and enjoy this impressive treasure, a symbol of the archaeological wealth of the Mayan world.

About the Mexico Tourism Board The Mexico Tourism Board (MTB) brings together the resources of federal and state governments, municipalities and private companies to promote Mexico's tourism attractions and destinations internationally.
